Did you know...

This week is banned books week. I know this sounds like a thing of the past, but unfortunately books are still being banned today. In fact, according to the American Library Association, in 2010 the top banned books were:

1. "And Tango Makes Three," by Peter Parnell and Justin Richardson.

This childrens book is based on the true story of Roy and Silo, two male penguins in New York's Central Zoo who come together to raise a puffin together.

So why was it banned? for homosexuality, religious viewpoint, unsuited to age group. This book is recommended for readers in preschool to third grade and published in 2005.

2. "The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian," by Sherman Alexie.

This young adult book is a semi-autobiographical novel of Native American teenager Arnold Spirit, better know as Junior. The book details his life on the Spokane Indian Tribe Reservation and his decisions.

So why was it banned? for offensive language, racism, religious viewpoint, sex education, sexually explicit, violence, unsuited to age group. This book is recommended for readers in seventh to tenth grade and published in 2007.

3. "Brave New World," by Aldous Huxley.

This book is a classic science fiction novel based on a future where natural reproduction is done away with and genetically manipulated children have predetermined positions within the world. Society is conditioned to value consumpition, loathe being alone and have recreational sex.

So why was it banned? for insensitivity, offensive language, racism, sexually explicit. This book was published in 1932.

4. "Crank," by Ellen Hopkins.

This young adult book is a semi-autobiographical novel of the author's teenager daughter who becomes addicted to crystal meth and the challenges she faces.

So why was it banned? for drugs, offensive language, racism, sexually explicit. This book is recommended for readers in eigth grade and up and published in 2004.

5. "The Hunger Games Series," by Suzanne Collins.


This young adult book is a science fiction novel based on a future where children are forced to compete in deadly games.

So why was it banned? for sexually explicit, violence, unsuited to age group. This book is recommended for readers in eigth grade and up and published in 2008.


6. "Lush," by Natasha Friend.

This young adult book based on a thirteen year old girl with a seemingly picture perfect family. In reality, she struggles to keep father's alcoholism a secret and protecting the family image that is until the burden gets too heavy.

So why was it banned? for drugs, sexually explicit, offensive language, unsuited to age group. This book is recommended for readers in seventh grade and up and published in 2006.

7. "What My Mother Doesn't Know," by Sonya Sones.


This young adult book is based on a ninth grader who struggles through the difficulities of being a freshman in high school, her romantic crushes and family life.

So why was it banned? for sexism, sexually explicit, unsuited to age group. This book is recoomended for readers twelve and up and published in 2001.


8. "Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting by in America," by Barbara Ehrenreich.

This non fiction book is written from the perspective of the undercover journalist based on what it is like to live in America on minimum wage.

So why was it banned? for drugs, inaccurate, offensive language, political viewpoint, religious viewpoint. This book was published in 2001.

9. "Revolutionary Voices," edited by Amy Sonnie.


This book is an anthology created by and for radical queer youth. It is committed specifically to the youth of color, young women, transgender and bisexual youth, (dis)abled youth, and poor/working class youth.

So why was it banned? for homosexuality, sexually explicit. This book was published in 2001.


10. "Twilight (Series)," by Stephenie Meyer.

This young adult book is based on a girl who falls in love with a vampire and leads on a werewolf {Team Edward / Team Jacob}. I know we have all seen the movies.

So why was it banned? for sexually explicit, religious viewpoint, violence, unsuited to age group. This book was published in 2005.

The only banned books I have read is the Twilight Series but I plan on reading all ten, that is if my local library hasn't banned them. I hope you all celebrate your right to read banned books this week. Love and curls, Rozy
